The drive & destination

What to expect on the Kathmandu–Lumbini route

🛣️

Via Prithvi + Mahendra Hwy

Follow the Prithvi Highway west to Narayanghat (Chitwan junction), then south on the Mahendra Highway through Butwal to Bhairahawa. Lumbini is 22 km west of Bhairahawa.

☸️

The Sacred Garden

The Maya Devi Temple marks the exact birthplace of the Buddha. The Ashoka Pillar (250 BC) stands beside it. International monasteries from 20+ countries surround the garden.

🏞️

Terai plains

The second half of the route crosses Nepal's southern Terai — flat, green, and hot. Bring water and sunscreen in April–October. October–March is the most comfortable time to visit.

🍜

Lunch stop at Narayanghat

Narayanghat (~4 hrs from Kathmandu) is a well-known rest stop — good Nepali meals, clean restaurants, and fuel. We stop here on the way down.

Departure time

Leave Kathmandu by 6–7 AM to arrive in Lumbini by mid-afternoon, leaving time to visit the Sacred Garden before dusk. Early morning is the best time for Lumbini — calm, cool, and quiet.
